Local Food

Studies show that people prefer locally produced food. They know it will be fresh, and they like the idea of cutting out the ‘food miles’ involved in transporting food around the country.

The South Hams produces some of the finest food in the country – ranging from its superb meat and seafood, to a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery products, preserves and specialist foods such as chilli chocolate!

Our aim is to help local producers to establish a market for their produce, and to encourage the Kingsbridge and district community to locate and buy locally produced foodstuffs.

We want to help you find the best websites to guide you in locating the best of local food. One of these is www.lovetheflavour.co.uk.   Love the Flavour is the brand name for Food & Drink Devon – a newly formed organisation which champions the county’s outstanding local food and drink.  The South Hams Food & Drink Association and Dartmoor Food Group have joined together to form Food & Drink Devon, and its website lists all the best sources of local food and drink under categories such as bakeries:sweet & savoury, dairy & eggs, organic, eating out and outside caterers.

Food From Devon is another online directory produced by Devon County Council designed to help you buy local food and drink directly from the producer or local food retailer.  However, as of April 2008 we are informed the South Hams Food & Drink site is no longer being actively maintained, although if you go to the website
(www.devonfoodlinks.org.uk), you may still be able to access the information you need.

BigBarn is a national organisation whose website can be used to advertise and locate food local to your postcode.  It is a tremendous resource, and if all local producers used it, finding local food would be so easy.  The website is www.bigbarn.co.uk   Try it.

When you are next in Totnes look out for a copy of the latest Totnes Guide to Local Food, Shopping and Eating Out.  This 44 page booklet has been produced by Transition Town Totnes to let people know about local options available in the Totnes area.  3000 copies have been printed and are available from food
outlets throughout the town.

Fresh Local FoodThe South Hams have some of the best and most innovative local food suppliers, and one of these is The Local Food Company (www.thelocalfoodcompany.co.uk) from South Brent – an online food business which delivers high quality westcountry food throughout the region and beyond.  They also specialise in food for holiday makers in the form of local food arrival boxes, and ethically sourced corporate food hampers.

The Local Food Company recently picked up the Green Business of the Year award at the Business Start-Up awards in recognition of their efforts to reduce and offset all carbon emissions linked to deliveries.  They also lead the way in labelling food miles, they have banned all known airfreighted produce and only sell seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Riverford Organic Vegetables order todayAnother company with exceptional green credentials is Riverford Organic Vegetables.  Visit their website (www.riverford.co.uk) to arrange delivery of their veg boxes,or visit the farm for a farm visit followed by a meal in their field kitchen to really appreciate the quality of their food and the importance they place on being green.  They are currently collaborating with Exeter University on a Sustainable Development Project.  I recently had a Moroccan meal to one of their special theme nights, and I have to say it was one of the best meals I have experienced in a long time.
